The everglades used to be a river flowing free to provide clean water to Florida Bay all the way from Lake Okeechobee. The water pollution and shrinking of the wetlands is putting this delicate ecosystem in danger of extinction. There is a plan in place to help save this home to many endangered species of plants and animals. On land controlled fires continue the aid the native grasses to be rejuvenated. While there is also action being taken in the water. In hoping to revive and restore a failing ecosystem the Cerp has been developed. This is the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan. This plan in place will require thirty years and when in place will cost an estimated 7.8 billion dollars. They hope to accomplish this by building levees and diversions to capture the fresh water that flows into the sea. This fresh water goes unused. This diverted water will mostly be devoted to reviving the Everglade ecosystem while the remaining water will enhance the supply to the cities and farmers in South Florida. The levee system will provide protection from flooding.
