Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel
One of the downsides to internet maps is its horrible ability to bypass really cool stuff in place of quick arrival times. Not everyone wants to sit on a 8 lane interstate for 12 hours.
While planning our trip to Philly, I've made certain to research seeing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, or to be a little more precise, drive thru it.
While Google maps clearly suggests going up 95 from Greensboro; we however, will be driving a little bit east of there so we can see this east coast version of the Golden Gate.
I remember when I was a little kid, and dad had a business trip in NY. When he got home he told me of this crazy and wacky bridge beneath the bay. Ever since then I've wanted to see it, and now is my chance. |

Just a word of caution about this route to Philly - it is going to take you a loooong time to get there. I usually go home (to Allentown, 45 minutes from Philly) via 220 to 81 to 78. Takes 8 hours tops. Now, I went to Ocean City, MD 95 and used the Bay Bridge and it took 9 hours! so figure 8 hours just to MD and then another 3-4 to Philly. I'm not telling you to skip seeing this tunnel/bridge - it is something to witness - but be prepared to pay 12 bucks on the way up and 12 on the way back, if you choose to come back from Philly this way. I hate 95! It takes me 10 hours to get home using 95 just because of traffic and construction and don't forget extra money for all the tolls - another 10-12 bucks in small change! Ughhhh.
While in Philly with the fam - do go to the Franklin Institute, kids love the walk through the Human Heart! The IMAX always has something cool to see. The Natural History museum is also very kid friendly. If you've never seen the Liberty Bell, do stop by and try to have brunch at Buddakan. It may be a little pricey, but it is an awesome restaurant. The Reading Terminal Market is also awesome filled to the gills with food - Delilah's for the best mac and cheese in the country!
Sorry to go one, but I just love Philly and I always want to help people enjoy the city as much as I do. Anyway, have fun and any questions about the big P send me an E.

No please, I'm loving it. Thank you. We're leaving in a week, and I really don't know anything about the place other then renting National Treasure, & Rocky. Insider info is great! Thanks
A friend at work who used to live there suggested I go to the Wharf and get seafood. Couldn't find much on the internet, but she said just to ask anyone when I got up there. |

The only Wharf Rest. I know of is in Aston,PA and I'm not sure on the mileage or even if it's still open (I couldn't find it on the internet either)In town for family fare (cause I don't know how old your wee ones are) Izzy and Zoe's is a nice place (used to be anyway) 224 S. 40th St. For authentic Italian food anywhere in South Philly is going to get you there (little Italy) I love Chinatown for sushi or asian or just for the little shops filled with asian trinkets. Moshulu (pronounced Mo-shoe'-loo)is a restaurant that I am dying to get to! It is located on an old clipper ship, restored and docked down at PENN'S LANDING (401 S. COLUMBUS BLVD). Here is the site http://www.moshulu.com/site/main.asp. Penn's Landing is also somewhere to go for shopping etc. http://www.pennslandingcorp.com/
I'm an ex cook and pastry chef so I take my food experiences very seriously! BTW - Nobles in H-town is one of the best places I have ever eaten at! Went there for Valentines with the hubby and we nearly had to be rolled out the door! |
