Manicure Vs. English
It's that time of the year again when my employer comes to me and requests I give my hard earned cash to some organization called United Way. While normally I give, because in general I consider the organization a good one, I've also been aware of certain things they support that isn't always aligned with my personal morals & ethics.
Clearly though I do support illegal immigration, or atleast helping thy brothers and sisters who are already here, But I know alot of individuals, especially those here in North Carolina might be against immigration. Perhaps that's why it was a surprise to me when I received a sheet that was titled "Your Weekly Gift Of..." with the United Way logo on it and these statements:
Quote:
Your Weekly Gift of...
$10.00 - The cost of a pizza. Provides training for an immigrant to become a nursing assistant.
$20.00 - The cost of a manicure. Helps 83 immigrants learn English and moves the toward U.S. citizenship.
To be bluntly honest I've screwed alot of Mexicans out of English because of my nails then. |

Beth,
Why do you support "illegal" immigration? There's a right way and a wrong way and these people have chosen to enter our country the wrong way. We shouldn't be rewarding people for breaking our laws. _________________ Carl Sagan:

Alot of reasons, but the bottom line is, If I were in they're shoes I would try to come here, and I would try to do better for my family. The legality of it is overshadowed by whats humane. Should we live in out 100,000 + homes here in the boro sipping on sweet tea and contemplating whether or not to add egg and cheese to our Bojangle's biscuits, while they live in cardboard shacks with shower curtains for doors, and drinks from a mud hole?
It does not hurt people to lend a hand to those in need, and immigrants are definately in need. |
