What you need is a good Doctor

One of my favorite shows just got a whole lot cooler!!

The evolutionary biologist and best-selling author of The God Delusion will appear as a guest star in the new series of Doctor Who, which began last night. "People were falling at his feet," says Davies, creator of the BBC's flagship show. "We've had Kylie Minogue on that set, but it was Dawkins people were worshipping."

As writer and executive producer of Doctor Who, Davies often plays with religious imagery (from a cross-shaped space station to robot angels with halos), but he's a fervent believer in Dawkins. "He has brought atheism proudly out of the closet!"

A lifelong Dr Who fan, I don't miss an episode, and now I am TOTALLY stoked!

As an aside, I cant wait for the fundies to start babbling on about the wording of that article..

So where does this appear in cable, then, exactly... :?:

That's crackin awesome, Sanjuro. Is this in the UK, or via BBC America? We usually watch it in the fall on the SciFi Network. My son and I just got around to watching the most recent Christmas episode last night. I would like to get into the old series, but don't know where to begin. Do you have any suggestions for a Dr Who newbie?

Well I know the new season started last saturday night on BBC 1, with a new episode this saturday. I think the Sci-fi channel will show them in the US but Im not sure when. Last season, the season was almost over in the UK before they even started here. I just download them via bit torrent Sunday morning usually. BitLord is a good one and mininova is a good place to download.

Dr Who returns April 18 (I think that will be the Christmas episode though)
http://www.scifi.com/doctorwho/

It seems the SciFi network is going to air the series earlier, this year. I caught the little advert in the bottom right corner of my TV while watching the X Files last night. I wonder if it has anything to do with people downloading the torrents, causing the network to loose advertising dollars. Waiting a week or two for a show to cross the Atlantic isn't that bad, but six months in the electronic age is just too much to ask.

Keep in mind the scifi channel edits a lot of stuff out to fit in commercials. I HATE that, so sadly I will still continue to download them. Plus, I get better quality with the download. :?

I didn't know that, though it's not surprising. I think I'll watch the broadcast of the Christmas episode ( Voyage of the Damned) just to see how badly they chop it up. I might have to resort to downloading also. I also wish that someone would show the Dr Who Confidential that seems to accompany the show in the UK. PBS was airing both last year but they were a season or two behind.

Thats cool. SciFi channel really dropped the ball with this show for many seasons.. that and Torchwood. Luckily Universal HD shows Torchwood episodes commercial free now.

And thankfully, somebody is listening!!

Ok, I grew up watching that campy god-awful BBC program Doctor Who. Every cheap prop and cardboard hallway made sense and fueled the imagination. I loved it. The TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimension In Space) that the Doctor used to traverse the galaxy and timeline was home to many a childhood fantasy...even though admittedly as a side effect it gave me massive nightmares filled with Daleks and Cybermen.

Problem is, there were never any toys to play with. At no time could my mini Tom Baker (4th incarnation of the doctor) and I fly a plastic TARDIS around my bedroom to visit the many Lego planets nor rocky driveway worlds that were home to a myriad of other childhood playthings.

Then, in the mid 80's the television doctor regenerated (as he is known to do) into another actor, Peter Davison. Peter was a younger Timelord, blonde with thick bowl shaped hair. I'm certain the actors youth and haircut resembling my own at the time had nothing to do with my instant love of the character 8) . At any rate, after adapting I found I liked this doctor as much as Tom. Later I would fall off with Doctor Who. He would regenerate a few more times (Each time succinctly worse character than the last) and before you knew it, the BBC stopped production. Mind you, the series started in 1963 and ran to 1989. Then in 1996 the Fox network tried to revive it with an American TV movie version. Sure I watched, but it seemed like they weren't trying hard enough in some areas and working a bit too hard to recapture the Tom Baker years...complete with curly hair and the like. This never made it past the movie, and again no toys.

Finally in 2005. Doctor who was fleshed out (as it were) again with a new timelord, and a fantastic energy. This time with Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor. This became an all new sensation and soon, the current Doctor David Tennant took over. Thus far he has been the Doctor for three seasons and (although taking a break next year to do theater) he looks to be the namesake for a while to come. My childhood and adulthood came smashing together one marvelous Christmas with the "Time Crash" short where Tennant's Doctor meets Davison's Doctor for a fundraiser.

I think I love this new series more than the old. Its certainly a BIT less campy but still retains that flavor, and the stories (while over the decades have been great) are much more well rounded and emotional. That said, one huge surprise this go round is there are finally TOYS released!!

I had not bought any of these, because quite frankly, I hadn't the need for them. Yet It was good to know they were there for someone.

Thats until a friend of mind did the the fantastic favor of picking me up the Comicon exclusive Peter Davidson /David tennant "Time Crash" toy set *complete with celery stalk I might add!

This was like a dream come true. When I found out there would be more of the former Doctors released this year, I immediately picked up a TARDIS for display.

Who.jpg

First the character toys...

The attention to detail is crazy.. The hair has depth, the clothes have texture and they look a lot like their human counterparts. They chose to go with the classic Davison Doctor, which is all the better.

Peter_Davison1.jpg

They did Tennant with as much care. Even down to his Chuck Taylors and posture...

Tennant.jpg

Of course the real surprise is the TARDIS. This is the toy I wanted my whole childhood. The windows and Police sign illuminate, it has the slow pulsating blue light on top, it makes the classic sounds during "take off" and "landings", but what makes it truly unique is the sound effects and interior lighting when the doors are opened... not to mention the spinning action and sounds that accompany it. To top it off, if you shake it the toy makes an all new sound and as an added bonus, you can open the phone door to reveal a police telephone. Brilliant.

Who 006.jpg

So, I am on a mission to get the rest of the Doctors when they come out. These make a terrificly whimsical display tucked in the corner of my place and will no doubt be hours of fun for any kids who are a fan. Not that I play with them myself, every night, in the dark corners of my place, where no one can see me...

Bottom line, I would highly recommend this to any Who fan. You wont be disappointed.

I remember seeing some of the older episodes from the 60's on PBS back in the 80's and got freaked out by the theme music. But now I think it's cool. In fact, I really got into the episodes that they were showing on BBC America last year. I believe they were from the 1st season of the new series, with Christopher Eccleston.

Oh, btw, I found this on youtube while back. Don't know if anyone else has seen it, but it's a spoof on spending a Christmas with Dr. Who.

Enjoy!

I had a battery powered Dalek when i was a kid. It ran round the floor and backed up if it bumped into anything. Unfortunately it was made of cheap plastic and broke almost immediately. If I still had it and it was in mint condition it would be worth $500.

Try a weekend marathon of Dr Who. I can hear the music in my sleep. Not that I sleep soundly. I have to keep an ear listening for Daleks.

Thanks, Sanj for prying yourself from the TARDIS and action figures so you could share a most excellent post! I still have a lot of time to get caught up on seasons/episodes I've missed.

 That's awesome. Loved the Tin Foil line. Eccleston was a great Doctor and I wish had done at least one more season (series). But Tennant is also awesome and to be honest, better in many respects. He really seems to have that character well understood.

I had a talking Dalek on my desk for a while and naturally everyone who came to visit played with it. One of my coworkers would end up complaining about the "shrieking".

EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE!

Not sure why I was thinking about Daleks this morning other than there's a whole bunch of stuff I'd really like to destroy today.

So I thought about Daleks, then I remembered this thread... :D

Who's next? I'd suggest Rowan Atkinson, but he's already done the role. Maybe the fat gay one from Little Britain.

I have the "Curse of Fatal Death" on VHS. I should turn it into an MPG, I'd hate to lose it,

I thought Joanna Lumley did a good job too. Nice Dalek Bumps.

Actually you can be. The new show's front runners have said they don't want anyone over 40. I've always wanted Patrick Stewart to take on the roll, oh well.
