Saw this at the grocery store today: Vegetarian-fed eggs.

This, I seriously do not get. Why would anyone want eggs from chickens that were not fed with "animal by-products"? Certainly not the folks who don't want animal by-products themselves... that what eggs ARE! Not to mention the fact that these eggs, along with the "organic" eggs, the "free-range" eggs and the "no cage" eggs are all like $1.50 more per dozen. Presumably because there's so much more labor to collect the eggs from where the hens are hiding them...

Seriously?

Well me for one. Feeding cows 'animal by products' was how the whole BSE thing was started. I buy grain fed chicken meat and grain fed chicken eggs from farms that have a stated policy of not routinely using antibiotics and not harvesting eggs and meat from chickens being treated with antibiotics. Free run eggs simply taste better, the chickens taste better and are safer to consume. I reckon that's worth 25% more.

Farmers have abused antibiotics for decades resulting in the forced evolution of antibiotic resistant strainsof bacteria. It's a disgrace.

Oh and 'animal by-products' isn't eggs or milk it's

It includes, but is not limited to, lungs, spleen, kidneys, brain, livers, blood, bone, partially defatted low temperature fatty tissue, and stomachs and intestines freed of their contents.

Yep. A lot of the diseases to which industrial farmed animals are prone come from the fact that we not only feed herbivores on meat but turn them into involuntary cannibals. You never know what diseases can lurk in your fellow creatures, locked in place only because they aren't transmitted under ordinary circumstances -- kuru being a human example.

Hope you like marshmallows. And chocolate. And stuffing giant, sweet treats into your mouth. You see, there's these things called "Schaumküsse" and they're just as much a part of a German childhood as, say, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups were to yours (assuming you're American and born in the last several decades). These Schaumküsse are giant marshmallows on a waffle cookie base, but completely entombed by a hard chocolate shell. Biting into them means breaking the barrier to reach the fluff inside—the "foam kiss."

Wait wait wait—here's the best part. The slogan of the popular Dickmann's brand is "Man, they are Dickmann." Awesome.


Wonder if I can have some Dickmann when I go to Belgium?

You do not want eggs from chickens fed animal byproducts because, amongst other things, chicken feed including ground feather waste (obviously and animal byproduct) has significant levels of antibiotics which was banned from being used as a feed additive over a decade ago, 'cause it keeps going 'round and 'round.

Our food production system is far from safe. Most grain & soy products are genetically engineered to produce proteans never seen in the food supply before. Animals are treated with chemicals with unknown effects on humans.

I eat organic food as much as I can afford, but a 100% organic diet is very difficult (and expensive) and may be impossible to achieve.

Feathers are just keratin, a protein. They are largely indigestible, and I don't believe they are fed to chickens.

The issue is more the organs - and while I like organ meat - kidneys, liver, heart etc, it tends to accumulate unpleasant stuff, so I don't want it fed to animals I want to eat - and when I eat it myself I make sure it comes from vegetarian animals.

It would do me no good, comparing tastes. I could not tell any difference. My taste buds have never been very acute. When I go for wine tastings with my son, he says things like "I can taste a nutty flavor, with a hint of some herbs and probably oak." I usually say, "The wine tastes dry." I can tell the difference between eggs and ham, but eggs and cage-free, organic, non-antibiotic, vegetarian eggs? Not very likely to happen...
