The First Mother's Day

It all comes flooding back to me as my friend has met her due date and eagerly awaits the birth of her second child. As each day passes her patience is getting the best of her. I too remember that mix of nerves and overwhelming anticipation, emotions so wild that you feel as if you'll explode. The birth of a child is an amazing, wonderful, scary thing. Your entire universe changes in a single heart beat. We all keep thinking how appropriate the timing would be for a Sunday delivery. For her sweet little girl would be a precious Mother's Day gift.

I came along an interesting artist and mother that has transformed her artistic vision and passion as a mother into a very creative gift. She collects breast milk and preserves it into a piece of jewelry to capture that bond between mother and child in time. At first I didn't recognize how special something like that could be to someone. Then the more I thought about it I realize that some people might really appreciate having a tangible memento of that brief moment in your child's life. There really is something to be said about that unique ability mothers have to nourish their infants from their own body. Some opt not to do it or struggle in doing so. I nursed both of our children and while it was exhausting and hard I now look back at that time as a gift. It was a time when their need for me made me special. As they get older their needs from us as parents are evolving and increasingly complex.

I love watching them learn and grow into such individuals but fondly remember those quiet moments I cherished, holding them in my arms during those nightly feedings. A beautiful pendant is most certainly a creative gift for a new mother so she may have a tangible reminder of when her journey began.

While my friend still waits, there is no way she can truly know what to expect when her baby is born. Her life is about to change in a way she cannot even imagine. Their family of 3 is about to become a family of 4 and nothing will ever be the same as it is in this moment.

LOL....

This reminds me of when my sister in-law was taking Spanish in college, and she referred to her sisters using "wife" for both of us, and apparently the professor marked her assignment wrong.
