Mustard Vs Ketchup - What's Your Food Allegiance?

Food, Travel, Arts, and Pop-Culture

It's a question for all time: if America was to out-law either ketchup or mustard tomorrow, what condiment would you vote to keep? What's better, mustard or Ketchup? I'm clearly a mustard girl in this saucy showdown. I find the idea of ketchup on hot-dogs deeply evil. Unfortunately I married a ketchup whore. Shan would sell me to get a bottle of ketchup before she'd eat her food plain. She smothers it on everything! It's rather gross. Of course the question arises, what would Liv do with French Fries in the absence of ketchup. That's easy... Ranch or Fritesaus or Vinegar.

Curiosity got the best of me, so I googled for more thoughts:

"God this stuff isn't getting to me: the shootings, the knifings, the beatings; old ladies getting bashed in the head for their social security checks. Nah, that doesn't bother me. You know what makes me really sick to my stomach? It's watching you stuff your face with those hot dogs! Nobody, I mean Nobody puts ketchup on a hot dog!"
--Harry Callahan in Sudden Impact

Ketchup is something you slobber all over your kids' food to make them eat it. Mustard is a heavenly condiment and proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.

Ketchup on a hot dog is an abomination. It is allowed for humans under the age of 16 perhaps, as mustard, like scotch, is an acquired taste.

I’m sick and tired of mustard sucker-punching me in the taste-buds and would be thrilled if it would just go away for good!

What????????

In Gloucester England, there is actually a law still on the books banning restaurants from serving a sandwich without this golden, tangy material

I'm not sure that's exactly true... but it should be.

"Try the mustard, a man can't know what turnips are in perfection without mustard."
-Mark Twain

Oh yes mustard! That'll do... Mustard? Don't let's be silly.
-Mad Hatter of Alice in Wonderland

Americans can eat garbage, provided you sprinkle it liberally with ketchup...
-Henry Miller

“Ketchup left overnight on dinner plates has a longer half-life than radioactive waste.”
-Wes Smith

Hey, I asked for ketchup - I'm eating salad here!
-Homer Simpson

'Sometimes I'll be walking down the street and I'll hear some American and I'll just go, 'Of course they hate us, of course they can't stand us. We're the most annoying, boisterous creatures in the world.' I mean we come in and we eat mounds of food, and we're like, 'Where's the ketchup for our French fries.' I'm like, 'Shut up.''
-Kate Hudson (on Americans in France)

-Bad News Bears (2005)

I like hot mustard for the first bite but
I like to chase it with a little honey on the second bite. You
know, its like having a small meal followed by a tiny dessert
every ten to fifteen seconds.
-My Name is Earl

The hot-dog and mustard go together. --Let 'em go together. I don't want to spoil any romance.

I miss a hot dog. --Astrodome. Good hot dogs there. --Astrodome? You can't grow a good hot dog indoors. Yankee Stadium. September. The hot dogs have been broiling since opening day in April. Now that's a hot dog. --The yellow mustard or the darker kind? --The darker kind. --Very important.

Every red-blooded American knows that the only condiment that goes on a hamburger is ketchup!
-The Whole Nine Yards

Who the hell puts catsup on a hot-dog?
-Dirty Harry

So there you go, clearly mustard is the winner. It goes great on pretzels, sandwiches, hot-dogs, and is clearly seen as the adult choice of food connoisseurs everywhere and the French won't hate you nearly as much.

My vote would be to throw ketchup off the Island

Why? Because making a tangy sweet and sour sauce is easy. You need sugar, vinegar and something else. I've had a Phillipian banana sauce that was close enough to ketchup. Then there are all the other relishes, chutneys and pickles that actually taste better. Like Branston Pickle, Major Grey chutney, Gentleman's Relish, Stampede BBQ sauce, Tamarind chutney or even Southern Corn relish.

But you can't make mustard without mustard.

While I can appreciate a fine variety of mustards on occasion ketchup is the condiment for any occasion. One can delve into the world of mustard tasting like you would wines and coffee. So many good and interesting sorts. I love mixing my ketchup and mustard together from time to time when I'm feeling particularly gluttonous. But if I were stranded on an island, yes, ultimately, condiment of choice is the almighty ketchup. It's like a comfort food all to itself. If ketchup were banned and I could no longer smuggle it in, I would graduate to BBQ sauce.

I could live without ketchup but life would be more sad without mustard.

I have a rule in general... if the burger has tomatoes... then it already has "ketchup", and therefore does not require any. If it doesn't have tomatoes you add a small proportion say 1:3 ketchup:mustard ratio.

I don't like either of them for hot dogs. Best thing on a hot dog is peanutbutter.
