Moffat's Sherlock

The man who helped Russell Davies kick start a new "Doctor Who" for a fresh generation has taken on one of the world's best known and loved Private Detectives. Steve Moffat's "Sherlock" is a rather interesting concept. It's the story of Holmes and Watson set in the modern age.

Someone-perhaps since I'm American-I have never hear of before (Benedict Cumberbatch) plays the series namesake and an actor who I grew to know and love as "Tim" on BBC's "The Office" (Martin Freeman) plays Doctor Watson.

Those familiar with Moffat's earlier endeavors will find his fingerprints all over this new telling. As a fan of much of his work on "Who", I found it rather refreshing to see this retelling through his pen. As a matter of fact, one can rather easily forget you are watching Holmes and for a split second imagine David Tennant rolling off lines and internal dialog at lightning speed. The other well written characters are equally at home in this story, and the creative use of modern storytelling help solidify and educate the audience of Holmes' brilliant deductive capabilities.

This was a fun, character driven, action adventure. For us "Yanks", the first installment of the three part mini aired last Sunday on PBS' "Mystery" in glorious HD. The second part airs this Sunday on "Mystery" and the third in a week.

It has since been picked up for a second series. I assume that means I will be adding it to my "Doctor Who" and "Top Gear" torrents come winter.... since no one here carries HD versions of these shows in any timely manner in the states :/

It gets my highest recommendation. I wondered how Freeman could handle big roles (He's since been cast as Bilbo Baggins in "The Hobbit") and now I know. The modern telling seems to really fit the mythology plus the story was very engaging and fun. With Moffat at the helm I cant imagine too much going wrong.

Oh yes, and like the new "Who", there is a bit of this as well:

Why do half of my favorite shows come from the BBC???

Thanks.... I've refrained from it since the movie left me somewhat discontent with the genre.

I'll take a stab at answering this.... Because, the atmosphere of production in the U.K. produces less visual (generally), better written material by a more diverse group of writers than Hollywood's closed culture. We think with words, and for someone who may be inclined to think more often, about more (diverse) things (such as yourself), the format of their television tends to be an expression of art you're more capable of relating to.
This is our chance to change things, this is our destiny.

The torrents are already at the following link. They carry a lot of the BBC productions. You may need to register but it is well worth that slight trouble. And check out their sister site, The MVGROUP, for gobs of BBC content.

Cool, I found this one which has all three, if any of those are dead... seems to be moving fairly quick:

I dunno. I look at shows like "Top Gear" and think they look heads and shoulders above most similar shows in the USA.

I'm not sure you can even say there is much lack of diversity in the UK vs. the USA. Most USA TV shows either are set in LA or have vistas that are very obviously Cali.

Maybe its very simply just better writing and more authentic characters/actors?

True that... I'm just grateful they continue to produce such good shows...

Though, BBC Wales, at least with Julie in charge was responsible for my most favorite tv shows.
