Torchwood Children of Earth about Swine Flu?

Pardon me for a sec while I indulge myself....

The lead writer of the Cardiff-based sci-fi drama series Torchwood says it's strange how world events seemed to have mirrored his latest storyline.

Russell T Davies says Torchwood: Children of Earth shows what happens when society starts to snap.

"Since we wrote this, the world economy has been perilously close to collapse, and along comes swine flu," he notes.

"At various points you discover in the Torchwood story that the whole thing was kicked off by a flu outbreak." via

So have you downloaded episode 1 and 2 yet?? I'm dying to see them. :(

Not yet, Supposedly they're due out on disc on the 28th... So I'm trying to hold out for the big-bang experience... Supposedly, on Tuesday (it's second night) it broke all the ratings, so it's looking good for a 4th season...

So my DVR has been dutifully carrying on this week recording each installment of Torchwood: Children of Earth. I decided to sit down and watch the first episode last night to start catching up. My hope was to be done by the weekend.

Well, I couldn't peel myself away. I ended up watching all 4 bloody hours and by 2am was screaming to see the 5th and final installment (which airs stateside tonight)

Wow wow wow.. They've done an excellent job and I will spoil NOTHING. Major stuff happens here.

I've been following the Tweets and the "reverb" on the show and as you say suposedly it's amazing.

I've held back on downloading it. It's supposed to be out next week on dvd in the states and I'm hoping to see it pronto...

I must admit I broke down last night and watched the Series 1 blu-ray....

I feel like an starving ethiopian child knowing theres a big-max on the otherside of the ocean, and I can't get to it....

Why do I have to be fascinated with stuff that is second-run in America?

WHY GOD? WHY!!!!

I know how you feel.

So I saw the final episode last night...

It was beyond disturbing. Seriously. I wish american tv was this good (deadwood, band of brothers, battlestar, sopranos aside naturally).

I can't describe how disturbing I found it. Absolutely brilliant. I would LOVE to get it on blu but honestly don't think I can watch it again. It really got to me.

Well I'm three episodes in, and all I can say is it's utterly amazing! Yes I'm a bit biased....

I stayed up with a headache and exhausted just to watch last night....

I started balling when they killed Jack again... then poured him in concrete <stone>.... (please tell me he isn't a Jesus metaphor)

I'm not a big fan that so much of it is in London so far... but the destruction of the Hub was amazing. Being I've stood in that very spot, it's unreal to imagine an event like that occurring, yet the composite shots were flawless.

It's so odd to see shops and buildings you've been in on the show. I feel homesick oddly enough.

And for anyone who's reading this thread and debating about netflixing or blockbustering it... Do it. Do it now. There is nothing, absolutely nothing on American Television that comes close to the cinematic experience of this show. As always the writing, the characters, and the curve-balls are spot on...

I even think if BHL can cover his eyes for the 5 seconds of gay kiss... he himself would enjoy it....

I must have cried for like the last 1.5 hours of the show.

Don't know if you watched the "torchwood declassified" that goes with it, but Davies does an excellent time of explaining the choices in the writing... Something I learned a lot from....

But my Gosh... I loved it.

My first two attempts at watching Torchwood season 1 didn't go well. The stories just didn't click with me. I was really bored recently though and remember something my son told me: That I hadn't gotten to the best episodes. So, I recently watched the last three episodes of the first season and promptly DLed season 2 and Children of Earth.

Wow. As you guys have said, never in America. Killing off characters each season, heroes as semi villains and imaginative story lines that aren't based on cookie cutter plot lines. The show has gotten really good.
As for the Jesus thing, yeah there are a few similarities but I think it's mostly coincidental. Not, I think, is the question of evil that pops up a lot in Children of Earth. I feel that Children was more a tragedy along the lines of Shakespeare than a Christian allegory.

IMHO.... It's much more than coincidental. In fact Davies has publicly stated that many of his themes are religious, and has said that DW and TW is proof you don't need religion to explain the abstract concept that appear in religion.

It was also common theme on set as Eve Myles points out (though only her opinion)....

No matter what the "official" opinion is on it, he's clearly has mastered the art of story telling through sacrifice.

That bit seems contradictory. Torchwood is proof you don't need religion to explain.... but Jack Harkness is Jesus. As for the video and him stopping in the door way with his arms extended, to me that seemed more a pose for the guys to get an eyeful. Jack does a lot of that.

No matter what the "official" opinion is on it, he's clearly has mastered the art of story telling through sacrifice.

I'll agree with that, but sacrifice doesn't belong only to religions. It's been a theme through out history. Then again, I argued against Donnie Darko being a Jesus allegory and was shot down when I watched the director's cut and the commentary. Still, the shorter version was a much better and coherent film.

Getting back to Torchwood, if the Christ theme is there, are we to infer that he becomes God the Father with the final, shocking sacrifice in CoE? Jesus was never said to have done anything quite like that.

The beautiful thing about art, is the same piece can be different things to different people....

I see a Christ figure, you see something else... either way, John Barrowman is smoking hot.
