The Third Testament

by Liv | Published on March 22nd, 2009, 8:00 am | Arts
On Friday we watched "The Second Coming", staring Christopher Eccleston and written by Doctor Who's Russell T Davies. (As well as multiple other "Who" actors.) It basically is a story, like the title suggests of an average man (Christopher) whom is chosen as the second coming of Christ and his revelation of it. He performs several miracles, gains a following and then warns the third testament must be written in order to prevent Armageddon.

Now I don't want to give away the ending, because I really enjoyed the movie (mini-series) and hope those who haven't seen it, run out and do so.... but, it's not what I expected. In fact I kept second guessing that these two artists willingness to be a part of such a religious movie all the way up till the end. Then the unexpected clincher and it all makes sense.

My first thought after the end... "That would never fly in the U.S."

So I'm curious if anyone has seen "The Second Coming", and their opinion of how Americans would react to a similar movie?

Personally, afterwards I felt the movie re-enforced my belief that Davies writes a lot of religious undertones within Torchwood & Doctor Who. In fact you can take this whole movie, swap a the characters names, and basically have an additional "Who" episode in my opinion.

Worth a watch, if you're curious.

This sounds interesting Liv. According to Wikipedia, it predates their work on Dr Who. I'd like to see this so if anyone knows where it can be rented, viewed or download, let me know. Yeah, I know Netflix has it, but I don't have Netflix.

It really was good... for a motion picture, unbelievable as a made-for-tv movie.

You might as well watch this.
All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second,it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

I have. Actually is was the first one.

But I doubt the sequels were any better.

Although it was supposed to be a 'cult classic' I thought it was just not very funny, like a Mad TV sketch that stopped being amusing after 5 minutes but went on for 90. One joke endlessly repeated

The only similarity between it and The Second Coming or The Passion is that they are all fiction.

The Second Coming has better acting and script though. Killer Tomatoes and The Passion have too much ketchup.

What's that supposed to mean? I figured a religious movie would be right up your alley!

The distinction is Christian movie verses a religeous movie. When it doesn't closely resemble anything in the bible (but implies that it does) then it could be a religeous movie (which I could care less about).

Have you seen it?

Seriously... in my honest opinion, except for the ending... it's 100%, right up your alley... and while I see "conservatives" hating the idea of their God abandoning them, I honestly believe that you are a rational individual capable of considering this as a provocative possibility in the "reality" of your religion.

When Jesus returns he won't be performing miricles or trying to save generations from themselves. He'll be coming to judge the world. I really see no similarities from your descriptions.

You know... that's my pet peeve...

I'm okay with you believing that... but perhaps you should watch the movie, then say it... rather than before... pre-judging something before experiencing it....

just is so annoying.

no offense of course... but give it a try... if you're so secure in your beliefs, it certainly wouldn't rock your views... then you can say what you're saying with conviction....

saying it in this manner changes the meaning of the words.

A couple of days ago I saw this post linked under "Similar Articles" and started reading the beginning of your post. Since you guys sometimes reveal more than I want to know before I see a film, I quit reading and searched for a torrent. Until I just read the complete thread, I couldn't understand why I had not downloaded it before, as I do remember when this was originally posted. I see that at the time there were no seeds, but there are now!

Anyway, if you are a fan of Davies, Eccleston, Doctor Who or are a religious skeptic or open minded, watch this show. It's so good, you don't even have to ignore the religious aspects. Just watch and get back to me.

My first thought after the end... "That would never fly in the U.S."

As I said above, I had not until now read your complete post. But immediately after watching part 2, I emailed my son* that he should watch this and stated just what you did above, that this couldn't be shown in the US. I did qualify that with "on other than pay cable channels". No way would a network try to show this. The Christians would raise such a stink that no one would dare sponsor the show.

So I'm curious if anyone has seen "The Second Coming", and their opinion of how Americans would react to a similar movie?

They would freak the hell out. For one thing, most of the religious people I know would think it sacrilege to even think about portraying Jesus in a fictional work. Irony, oh irony. While you and I might consider the film to have a positive message, some people's heads would explode after watching the ending.

*Currently away at college, this summer he re-watched the last few seasons of Dr Who and has a thing for all things Steven Moffat, in particular a series titled "Coupling".

Oh, I'm so glad you saw it.... Loved this movie, loved it... Davies writes so much of what so many of us are trying to convey. I think we should take up an offering and buy a bundle of these dvds of amazon, and replace the bibles in local hotels with this sucker.
