Today Rocky 6 began playing at local Greensboro theaters. I camped out all night in front of the Carmike Cinemas to be first in line for the the premier of Rocky 6.
Or atleast that was the plan, except for the fact it got really cold, and I kinda forgot about the whole thing until this morning. I woke up this morning and drove over to Walmart to pickup a few toys Santa requested me to help out with. Picked up the kids and drove over to the Koger Cineplex, and ordered my pop-corn and Pepsi.
Is it just me or do cinemas make more money everytime you go the bathroom? I swear, they put something in the sodas to make you go to the toilet, no less the 3 times during any movie.
I was worried when we got there if we'd even get a seat. There were busloads of kids there on a field trip to see it too. I couldn't help myself think, it's about time these kids see something educational. Afterall here was the ultimate tale of Good and evil, a moral story of biblical proportions, and if the Beatles thought they were bigger than Jesus, then Rocky is bigger than life.
Here's a 60 year old man, who is the resurrected hero of every movie goers heart since the 70's. What's amazing is he looks better than ever, and his acting has gotten even better.
Needless to say the kids ran by the Rocky Theater for some Christmas movie about kids stuck in an airport. Like, yeah, that hasn't been done before... cough, cough, Home Alone.
So we sat down and watched Rocky 6, reliving our visit to Philadelphia earlier this year. Rocky runs a restaurant called Adrian's in the heart of Philly, named after his deceased wife. The film explores many aspects of Philadelphia, including the Italian market, and the restaurant used in the movies as Adrian's which is a real authentic restaurant.
So Adrian died of breast cancer, and although she's been replaced by some girl you expect at any moment to turn into some pedophile relationship, but Rocky is still to in love with Adrian even though its been years & Rocky can't seem to let her go.
This is when Rocky decides to get back in the ring, taunted by a computer match-up, and some heavy weight boxer who cares more about his money, than some pet store employee, the two eventually find themselves in the ring.
If your expecting alot of fight scenes and choreographed music montages, you'll be surprised that this Rocky is a completely different animal. Rocky 6 is about catching up on the characters, where they've gone, and what they've done in the many years since Rocky fought Tommy Gunn outside of the Philadelphia bar. But you won't be disappointed because before long Rocky is running up the steps to Rocky's famous song, and Boxing like the Italian stallion is known for. It's funny, witty, and undeniable a flash back to everyone's past.
My one criticism?
Why wasn't the song "Eye of the Tiger" not in the movie? Maybe for Rocky 7, we can work on that Sly? What do you say?
