The Rocky Steps

It's so funny I've been reading up on the famed Rocky Steps from the movie Rocky, which are located in Philadelphia. It's odd because perhaps more then any other attraction in Philadelphia this is the most popular, and it's just steps.

One of the articles I read quoted the museum's manager as saying It's nice to see visitors come and run up the steps, but I wish they'd come inside the museum.

He's referring to the art museum that the steps lead up to. Isn't it odd that a city with so much history gets overshadowed by a 20 year old movie with Sylvester Stallone? So much so, that the visitor to these iconic step doesn't even realize that they are for the museum? Does The Liberty Bell, and Ben Franklin belong beside the embodiment of the American spirit portrayed in a fictional movie?

Could it be some guy in boxing glove, is as much of a national monuments as the liberty Bell? I think so. After all, isn't America all about the underdog who rises against all odds from poverty and misfortune to battle some overwhelming obstacle?

I wrote the following paragraph a few months ago when the first peeps of Rocky 6 had made it on to the Internet:

I love Rocky. Technically he's as American as apple pie, but now he's nearing retirement, an easy-go-scooter, and big fat jar of prunes. But he's going to make one last come back. This is the trailer everyone on the net is buzzing about. The Rocky VI (6) preview from the movie due out this December. Count me first in line to see the embodiment of the American spirit.

I've been to the historic Rocky Steps this year, and I can tell you that indeed there is something spiritual about Philadelphia. The city needs it's icon back, and it's got it in Rocky 6.

I still agree with my statement. Last year for family vacation we visited the beloved Rocky Steps in Philadelphia and fell in love with the city that Rocky Balboa is from. It's full circle for me as I will be first in line to see Rocky 6. So Deal with it here is another endorsement for the best movie ever to be made 6 times over, Rocky Balboa.

The question is, is it full circle for Rocky? Will he lose this one like he did in the first?

If he has any sense, Stallone will kill the "Rocky" character in this one. .. and GRACEFULLY (one would hope)!

But then there would be no 7, 8, 9....

Today Rocky 6 began playing at local Greensboro theaters. I camped out all night in front of the Carmike Cinemas to be first in line for the the premier of Rocky 6.

Or atleast that was the plan, except for the fact it got really cold, and I kinda forgot about the whole thing until this morning. I woke up this morning and drove over to Walmart to pickup a few toys Santa requested me to help out with. Picked up the kids and drove over to the Koger Cineplex, and ordered my pop-corn and Pepsi.

Is it just me or do cinemas make more money everytime you go the bathroom? I swear, they put something in the sodas to make you go to the toilet, no less the 3 times during any movie.

I was worried when we got there if we'd even get a seat. There were busloads of kids there on a field trip to see it too. I couldn't help myself think, it's about time these kids see something educational. Afterall here was the ultimate tale of Good and evil, a moral story of biblical proportions, and if the Beatles thought they were bigger than Jesus, then Rocky is bigger than life.

Here's a 60 year old man, who is the resurrected hero of every movie goers heart since the 70's. What's amazing is he looks better than ever, and his acting has gotten even better.

Needless to say the kids ran by the Rocky Theater for some Christmas movie about kids stuck in an airport. Like, yeah, that hasn't been done before... cough, cough, Home Alone.

So we sat down and watched Rocky 6, reliving our visit to Philadelphia earlier this year. Rocky runs a restaurant called Adrian's in the heart of Philly, named after his deceased wife. The film explores many aspects of Philadelphia, including the Italian market, and the restaurant used in the movies as Adrian's which is a real authentic restaurant.

So Adrian died of breast cancer, and although she's been replaced by some girl you expect at any moment to turn into some pedophile relationship, but Rocky is still to in love with Adrian even though its been years & Rocky can't seem to let her go.

This is when Rocky decides to get back in the ring, taunted by a computer match-up, and some heavy weight boxer who cares more about his money, than some pet store employee, the two eventually find themselves in the ring.

If your expecting alot of fight scenes and choreographed music montages, you'll be surprised that this Rocky is a completely different animal. Rocky 6 is about catching up on the characters, where they've gone, and what they've done in the many years since Rocky fought Tommy Gunn outside of the Philadelphia bar. But you won't be disappointed because before long Rocky is running up the steps to Rocky's famous song, and Boxing like the Italian stallion is known for. It's funny, witty, and undeniable a flash back to everyone's past.

My one criticism?

Why wasn't the song "Eye of the Tiger" not in the movie? Maybe for Rocky 7, we can work on that Sly? What do you say?

Yesterday while dodging the last minute shoppers on 5th avenue we made our way up to 86th and third to line up at Papaya King (for my much needed hot dog fix). Seriously I lust after this place. Im SO glad there isnt one in Greensboro, otherwise I would be increasing in pants size once a week.

Wanting to get out of the crowd for a while we ducked into a theater and checked out Rocky Balboa.

Yeah, you're right on Liv, this was a fantastic Rocky movie. I think you mentioned a lot in your post that I wont repeat. Suffice to say, I think its well worth the 10 bucks.
