Roller Blading Tips? Please!

by Liv | Published on August 20th, 2008, 6:33 pm | Life
I'm 31 years old. What caused me to strap on roller blades today and attempt to make it around the block is beyond my comprehension. I'm an amazing Ice Skater, and Roller Skater.... Inline Skates? Not so much, and I'm not sure why. Maybe someone has some tips....?

... That's if I go out again. Made it about 1/4 around the block and did a full backwards flip and landed on my back. Pavement hurts much more as an adult then I remember as a kid. My son looked over as kept repeating "Mom, are you okay?" I attempted to get up, then laid back down as my entire nervous system cringed in complete pain. I was convinced I paralyzed myself.... I laid there thinking, "What the hell where you thinking Liv?" Luckily a few minutes later, I found the courage to get up. My arm and back is a bit scraped up, and my neck hurts like hell. Oh! Who came up with putting the darn brake on the back of these things? Wonder if that can be switched to ghetto 1970's skating rink style....

I rollerbladed quite a bit in my early 20's. The key is momentum. I was never great but could get around and it became easier with practice. Stopping was always the tricky part for me. Hang in there!

Sorry, that's as far as I read... j/k

Sanj is right about the momentum, and you've both just reminded me why I still don't have rollerblades. I'm better at ice skating than rollerskating, and I'd love to rollerblade for exercise. However, I have a feeling that even if I wore every piece of safety gear out there, I'd manage to find a way to injure myself. Either that or I'd go blading for a while then the novelty would fizzle out before I get injured.

Her problem is that she didn't have a hockey stick in her hand....
All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second,it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

I got nothin. Like you, I can ice and roller skate. First time I tried rollerblades, though, I figured in line wheeling would be like ice skating. Assumed a straight rigid blade = rollerblade wheel configuration. NOT!
Maybe it was the construction of the boots - they were not flexible at all like leather roller or ice skate boots but my knees hurt a lot and I gave it 5 minures before I said screw this.

Only if you get the ones with wings and sing songs from Xanadu whilst wheeling around.

Ha! There's a blast from the past. I think the Carolina Circle mall post was what brought me to this place.

The Ice House off Bridford is the only one here in town... so far as I know. They're pretty nice, IIRC.

Yes please. Let's put all of us in the same room with BHL and a bunch of "blades" very handy/accessible on top of a large sheet of ice. What a great idea.
