T.G.I.C.

by Serendipitous | Published on December 17th, 2007, 1:22 am | Life
I was at TGIFriday's for lunch today (or really Sunday afternoon) and overheard a little bit of conversation at the table next to mine. I couldn't decide if the trio (two guys and a girl) were friends or siblings, but regardless they were making plans for Christmas.

It sounded like they were trying to figure out their work schedules and other plans so that they could get to Pennsylvania and celebrate Christmas with family. I know nothing about these people, so I have no clue if "Christmas" to them is "Santa" or "sweet baby Jesus." But what I do know is that they were doing something that a lot of folks do during the holiday season - making time for family and friends.

For some folks and for whatever reasons they may have, this is the only time of the year that they would do whatever it takes ("move heaven and earth" if you will) to be with family and friends. Yeah, and sometimes it turns stressful when "this is why I only visit once a year" crops up, but there is usually a mother somewhere who is really happy that her grown kids have "come home for the holidays"... a little sister who still looks up to her big brother and is elated because he's home... a friend who is thankful that after 25 years his friends still come over on December 24th to play the White Elephant Game (and get drunk on egg nog and tell stories about previous Christmas Eves  ).

So... thank goodness it's "Christmas." May each of you enjoy the company of loved ones...family and friends.

Ever since working retail, Ive never looked at Christmastime the same. Probably never will I suppose. It's like blunt trauma to that side of the brain.

Try Christmastime at a toystore and having parents whine about how they have to have the Nerf Bow and Arrow or else Christmas will be ruined. Ugh! But I learned from that experience:

1. If I'm going to "spoil" my kids, it won't be through material things.
2. Parents can be worse than the kids, and if the kid is a brat, it's likely because of the parent(s) or other adult in charge, like those WoNDeRFuL customers at the toystore.
3. The Nerf Bow and Arrow wasn't as great as the commercials made it out to be. I'm betting the kids whose parents ran all over town trying to get it didn't play with it nearly as much as you'd have thought from the hollerin' they did in my store.

A member of this online community that no longer posts here told me the story of what happened to his wife last week. Apparently the entire xmas staff of a local toystore abandoned ship one night in face of the madness and they had to call all the full timers in to cover. I can only imagine. :?
