Drinking and Driving - Jacqueline Saburido

With March Madness in full swing, and local streets are filled with tipsy sports fans, I'm reminded by a recent email on the consequences of drinking and driving. I myself have been known to do stupid thing, and thankfully I'm still alive, but sometimes we need a reminder of what happens to the innocent, or to those that do not die in a drinking related fatality. This is a personal issue to me since, practically everyone in my family seems to have difficulties with alcohol. While I have many vices, I am lucky to have not alcohol be one of them.

This is Jacqueline Saburido on September 19, 1999.

This is her and her Father, 1998.

This is her on Vacation in Venezuela.

The car in which Jacqueline traveled. She was hit by another car that was driven by a 17-year old male student on his way home after drinking a couple of hard packs with his friends. This was in December 1999.

After the accident Jacqueline has needed over 40 operations.

Jacqueline was caught in the burning car and her body was heavily burnt during around 45 seconds.

Without a left eyelid Jacquie needs eye drops to keep her vision.

Now 20 year old, he cannot forgive himself for driving drunk on that night three years ago. He's aware of devastating Jacqueline Saburidos life.

Not everyone who gets hit with a car dies. This picture was taken 4 years after the accident and the doctors are still working on Jacqueline, whose body was covered with 60% severe burns. It's ironic that the drunk driver came out of this accident with hardly a scratch, but he ruined his friends life.

Liv, if I lived in Greensboro, I would invite you on a tour of our intensive care unit, followed by a visit to our neurological trauma rehabilitation unit. There you would see some people who used to be beautiful children, but who are now paralized from the waist down, or from the neck down due to car accidents. You would see young people who must wear football helmets every waking minute because they will never regain their balance to walk safely. Others will never speak intelligibly again, or ever graduate from high school (much less college) because they are now too brain injured to ever function cognitively again. They will never marry or have children, or live independently. Or, I could take you to another part of rehab and let you see what a person looks like after a car accident when the car caught on fire. And the kid suffered 3rd degree burns over 40% of his body--including his face. So he will always look like a "monster".

All you have to ask yourself before you EVER let them get in a car with her behind the wheel is this:

Is it worth my child's life or health?
