I assume that touch down was somewhere in Russia.... must be jarring not to land in the ocean.

It touches down at less than 1.5 m/s (3.4 mph) so it's no big deal. Apollo splashed down at 10 m/s (22 mph). By all accounts the Soyus is a softer landing.

Of course the early landings were pretty rough and being eaten by wolves was a possibility

I suppose the whole fear of chute-deployment-failure becomes an interesting mind-game. Crushed in a tin can, vs crumpled in a tin can and drowned.

Wolves and bears vs sharks and whales?

Hmmm....

If the chute fails it doesn't much matter if you land in the water or on land, either impact will be disastrous. Anything over 100 fps and hitting water will be like hitting concrete. A vehicle can drive over water if it keeps above 50 mph

The real difference between the approaches is simple geography. The US has a lot of sea to the east, Russia has a whole lot of land.

I'm still trying to figure out how Dynamo did his trick.

Most suggest he did it like Cris Angel did it, with a platform....

But, how did they manage that with what I would think would be an unlevel river floor.

Ahhhh!!!!

Never heard of that song before. Pretty cool, I reckon. I had hopes of doing that stuff when I was a kid... just never made the right choices -- though I guess having truly bad eyes would have made it impossible anyway.
