Today, I went to the bank to get my regular supply of dollar coins to circulate. It's my thing, you know. Anyway, I was sorting out the coins, deciding which ones I keep in my desk at work for the vending machines and which ones I'll carry for adding to my tips... and I came across something odd.

It looked like an old Sacagawea dollar from 2000, only there was no date on the obverse.

I wondered if I had found a mint error. Which would be so cool.

I looked on the back:

Well, that was totally new to me. I'd never heard of this coin at all. My eyes are getting a bit weak, and the text on the rim is beyond my ability to read without magnification... So I did some checking on the web. Seems that the Mint was authorized to issue a coin commemorating Native American agriculture. And apparently, to do it rather quietly.

Which is cool in its own way. Wish I'd heard of this earlier.

Further info:

Apparently, the mint thought it'd be a good idea to try and push these things out through the tills at Disney World.

I was given a Sacagawea dollar when they first came out. When I tried to spend it I was told "we don't take foreign money"

Apparently real money has to fold

Obviously you do not know what a hyperbolic chamber actually is. That's ok. I'm used to you pretending to know what you are talking about BecauseHeLives, 2009 August 16

People really have odd notions about coinage in this country. Currency in general.

I heard a story about Soupy Sales the other day when the news came out that he had died. Apparently, for a while, he had a childrens' show on in New York. Sort of a precursor to Pee Wee Herman's weirdness. He got in trouble one day for telling his young viewers to go to their mommies' pocket books and remove all the green pieces of paper with pictures of presidents on them and send them to him.

Funny thing: that would have precluded him receiving any 10's or 100's. Assuming the children were well-versed in history and knew the difference.

I remember the Golden Dollar thing a few years back... they even got vending machines taking them.... but no one ever used them.... I loved having Coin £s... while over in Europe... I'd personally prefer it here in America.... since the dollar bills get warn out so darn quick.

I get dollar coins from the bank every week. I do my part to get them in peoples' hands. But folks do have conservative natures. Even though the dollar coin is FAR more practical than the notes (due to the far longer life expectancy), people will resist the change and insist that the government waste money to make the Washington bills.

It is strange. Many years ago Canada had a red two dollar bill, it was widely circulated and used - except in Alberta. None to be seen. If someone brought one in from outside it would disappear.

I'm told it was considered unlucky and that America also had a very unpopular $2 bill. I offered to take all the bad luck on myself, but no one would take me up on it.

I love the $2 bill here. It has Jefferson on it... so maybe that's why it's so rarely seen. Farright Town denizens freaking hate Jefferson, cause he was an Infidel.

You'd think the $5 Lincoln bill would be the 'unlucky' one.

There's no issue with the $2 'Tooney'* coin.

*The $1 has a Loon on it and was called the Looney, so the $2 had to be a tooney.

The Mint didn't like the unofficial name and tried to get it called something else (Dublooney was popular too) but it's stuck and the Mint has trademarked the name.
