My car was threatened

by SouthernFriedInfidel | Published on June 3rd, 2009, 6:16 am | Life
This morning, I got in my car to drive to work, at 6:15 as usual. When I got to the main road outside of my neighborhood, there was no traffic to be concerned with. But there were about 2 dozen Canadian geese and half-grown goslings meandering across the road. I had to get past them to head to work, so I pulled slowly out, hoping the critters would see the car coming and waddle out of the way.

Most of them did, except for one mother goose. That damn beast decided she could take on my Insight (actually, she was taller than my hood), and she spread her wings and hissed at me. I tried honking my horn and flashing my lights, but that only seemed to make her more angry. I was wondering if she was about to attack.

I noticed that the rest of the geese had finally cleared off the road, so I slowly drove around my adversary. She watched me closely, but didn't try to snap at anything. I really hate these critters...

There's a pond outside of my neighborhood, and it's a beside a street that gets pretty busy during commuter hours. I've seen so many dead ducks and geese in the road, beside the road... but I've not seen any of our fowl friends interact with a passing, er, trying-to-pass vehicle that way.

Sometimes it is kind of entertaining to watch them dawdling and waddling, trying to cross the road. I give them voices, sort of like "Dug" in "UP". (Yes, I still want to see it again!) "Doh-dee-doh... lookin' for worms... doh-dee-doh... looking' for worms..."

They don't seem to care that much for you either dude.

Well, like I said, she was taller than the top of my hood. Running over her could have done damage to my aluminum bumper.

Well, in past years, when I was tossing bread scraps to them outside of restaurants, they seemed rather friendly. :D

Lake Mary Nell (next to the Faith Model Center for Arts on Elon University campus) has some aggressive geese. Things may be all fine and dandy when you're giving the nice ones some bread crumbs/scraps, and then the mean aggressive ones show up... and they'll chase you. Some of them are mean ol' frakkers!

They make good guard animals. They will face down intruders, make a lot of noise and lay down low friction mines.

They can be tough, but have a good flavour

Put the goose, breast down, in a covered roasting dish with a broth made from

1 large or 3 small carrots, sliced
1 onion, chopped
1 sharp apple, sliced (Bramley or Cox)
4 cloves garlic, crushed
salt, pepper to taste
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme, remember me to ...
4 bay leaves
2 or 3 cups stock - enough to fill the dish 2-3" deep

Preheat the oven to 375F, cover and cook for 30 mins and then reduce the heat and cook for a further 1.5 - 2 hours at 325-350F. Add a small roux to thicken the stock (or 1 level tablespoon of corn starch in 1/4 cup water), turn the goose over and roast uncovered for 30 mins to crisp up the skin.

Try to get the wheels either side so it's not crushed. Same with rabbits. That way hopefully they get killed with a broken neck and not too much body damage. But if you're brave you can just walk up to them and grab them by the neck. Mano a Gooseo. Watch the feathers fly.

When I was a student we would try to run down dinner and were often quite successful. A friend knocked down a pheasant, put it in the trunk, drove home and told his girlfriend dinner was in the trunk. Unfortunately the pheasant was only stunned and when she opened the trunk it flew up in her face, causing her some considerable distress.

I called the cops on my neighbor's dog the other day.... I warned them a few days ago, and I go to take Savannah for a walk and it comes snipping at my feet and Ren's. I called the police... I hate to do it, but I'm not going to be captive in my own house because others can't follow the leash law.
