If thy right hand offend thee, cut it off

A True Christian or a raving looney? You decide.

HAYDEN, Idaho (AP) -- A man who believed he bore the biblical "mark of the beast" used a circular saw to cut off one hand, then he cooked it in the microwave and called 911, authorities said.

The man, in his mid-20s, was calm when Kootenai County sheriff's deputies arrived Saturday. He was in protective custody in the mental health unit of Kootenai Medical Center.

"It had been somewhat cooked by the time the deputy arrived," sheriff's Capt. Ben Wolfinger said. "He put a tourniquet on his arm before, so he didn't bleed to death. That kind of mental illness is just sad."

It was not immediately clear whether the man has a history of mental illness. Hospital spokeswoman Lisa Johnson would not say whether an attempt was made to reattach the hand, citing patient confidentiality.

The Book of Revelation in the New Testament contains a passage in which an angel is quoted as saying: "If anyone worships the beast and his image and receives his mark on the forehead or on the hand, he, too, will drink the wine of God's fury."

The book of Matthew also contains the passage: "And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for you whole body to go into hell."
He was in custody in the mental health unit of Kootenai Medical Center? Why not contact the local piggery and drive the demons into new porcine hosts and drown them? That's the biblical thing to do.

Any chance you can, right AP?
All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second,it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Are you suggesting that he shouldn't follow God's inerrant word?

Well look what happened to this poor sap. Follow god's "inerrant" word these days and you liable to end up in the looney bin wondering "Why hast thou forsaken me lord?"
Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you "choose" to respond to it.

I'm not SUGGESTING anything. You (and others here) take any and every chance you can find to bash Christianity. One has to wonder why an atheist, self-professed disbeliever of the bible, would so fervently go to post such articles pretending that it represents mainstream Chrisitanity. Is there nothing better to do with the little time you have left on earth than argue the points against what you to believe to be a fairy tale.

I suggest you are a believer but you are looking for any way imaginable to not believe.

Finally - an example of someone who really is a true Christian. Following every jot and tittle and believing the Revealed Truth - and acting without hesitation when the time came.
The Rapture already happened. All the good Christians are gone. We're stuck with the rejects.

I didn't for a moment assert that it represents mainstream Christianity. Few Christians have the strength of faith to obey all the commandments in the Bible. They filter them through a self-interest filter first.

Seems to me this man had the same problem you guys do. He reads the bible, yet doesn't pay attention to it.

Rev 13:14-And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by [the means of] those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.

Rev 13:15-And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

Rev 13:16-And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:

Rev 13:17-And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

This tells of the time of the coming of Satan into the Anti-Christ, and his deceptions. This occurs during the TRIBULATION.
That'd mean that at least 7 years ago, that close to a billion people disappeared off the face of the earth. That has yet to come now, let alone 7 years ago.

Mat 5:27-Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:

Mat 5:28-But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

Mat 5:29-And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast [it] from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not [that] thy whole body should be cast into hell.

Mat 5:30-And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast [it] from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not [that] thy whole body should be cast into hell.

Jesus never advocated the dismemberment of any part of the body. Of course, these words were said concerning sin, specifically adultery. To take these words literally is stupid. Your hand cannot act on its own, as everyone thinks before they act (unless its a reflex, but you can't sin involuntarily). So maybe a few of you should cut off your heads?

So if the words only applied to adultery, wouldn't a different body part be referenced? Was Lorena Bobbitt only following the Word?
Are you saying that the verses you posted contradict these?:

The book of Matthew also contains the passage: "And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for you whole body to go into hell."

Or are you saying that the words in the Bible, which many Christians say are inerrant, eternal and to be taken literally- shouldn't be?

I prefer to stay away from stories about people who have been driven insane by obsessing about their religion. I mean, look at Tom Cruise!

But wait! If every word of the bible is literally true, then every word must be taken literally. I've had many arguments with BHL about whether every word in the bible is to be taken as literally, historically and scientifically true. He says "yes". Do you agree with me and say "no"?

No Questioner. I've never said that. You are confusing me with saying that the bible is the complete inspired Word of God. Where we disagree on this subject is that there are "parts" of the bible that you choose to believe metaphorically where I believe those parts to be literal.

I don't know of ANYONE who believes that the bible is 100% litereal in every respect as you are portraying me.

So our only disagreement is about which bits of the bible are literally true and which are not?????

No. Wrong again.

Regarding the bible We have two interpretation issues.

1) I believe the entire bible to be the total complete inspired Word of God. You choose to believe that only a small section is inspired...typically the parts in red letters.

2) We also disagree on which parts of the bible are literal and which parts are not. I've never stated that the whole bible was literal. We just disagree on which parts are literal.

3) You see discrepancies between the parts you do not believe to be inspired and with the red letters. I do not see the same discrepancies as you do.

Some Bibles have the words attributed to Jesus in red, a reference to Luke 22:20: This cup is the new testament in my blood

In some bible the words of Jesus are denoted in red. There is a term called red-letter literalist . Those people only believe the words in red.

I said Sin in general, and SPECIFICALLY adultery, not only. Way to jump to conclusions, though...

Once again, how does your HAND cause you to do anything? Your hand does what your head tells it too. You have to look behind the words and into the meaning. :|

You mean Jesus was saying you should cut your head off?

Given that Jesus was talking about lusting after passing bootie then it's true that your body's involuntary responses can influence your head. Perhaps Jesus really did mean for you to cut some other part off - Oh wait what does he say in Matthew 12?

If you had even glanced at my other posts, you would know I deemed that theory a possibility. :D

Hm. You have an involuntary movement, such as a spasm or reflex, that makes you play grab-tail? Very unique, I'll leave it to you guys to give it a name and give some outrageous percentage for the amount of people who have it. Heres an idea, call it BS-syndrome. :|

Nothing concerning dismemberment. :D
