Gay marriage ban tossed by CA Supreme Court

The battle over this issue continues. I'm going to have to check back on this story a little later. Normally CNN is pretty good about posting PDF versions of the actual court judgment text. Which I find to be very interesting reading.

As always, the forces of exclusion have said that allowing gays to get married would harm "family values." I have NEVER understood this. There are plenty of abusive, wretched, loveless "straight" marriages -- don't THEY harm the value of marriage? OTOH, what difference would a gay couple living down the street make to anyone's marriage? Seems to me this "values" statement is a smoke screen for simple bigotry.

Anyway, I hope this gets resolved in favor of all couples that want to get married. I personally don't recommend it, but hey -- to each his or her own.

The big question is (assuming Democrats win the presidency) 8 years from now will we have civil partnerships or legalized marriage for same sex couples? If we don't, we will be so far behind most countries our culture will seem third world and barbaric (it almost does now) to other countries.

Back to the post.... I don't see how any court could rationally look a gay marriage bans as rational or even reasonably acceptable from any kind of belief system.

My bigger question is why do people who are against it waste so much energy, so much effort on something that will never effect them?
This is our chance to change things, this is our destiny.

I expect that nearly all opposition comes from the religious notion (I have probably mentioned this before) of godly corporate punishment as described in the Torah. In Numbers, there are stories of ONE person or ONE family going against the rules, and God punishing the entire nation. This is the excuse I expect you will find coming from a lot of these folks.

But IMO, that is just a smoke screen that they use to try and hide simple bigotry. They hate and/or fear people who are sexually different from them, and will oppose any sort of equal treatment for them, like allowing inheritance, rights to visit in the hospital or what have you. I agree it's not rational, but that will only make the struggle last longer and be more bitter than it should be. People who aren't rational are hard to deal with.

But I remember going to school here in NC that use to tell me the Bible says black people are less then white people in some manner. I've never really checked, as I now, as always consider statements like that rubbish... but I don't understand why some people feel their religious beliefs entitle them to impose their beliefs on others? And more to the point why choose the issue of gay marriage?

I'll come right out and say it, the thought of male homosexual sex feels deeply wrong to me. Thinking about the act of it disturbs be at a subconscious level.

I don't feel the same way about lesbian sex and I accept that my feelings are not rational.

I certainly don't think my inhibitions should dictate what other people are permitted to do, but it's likely my feelings are not unusual and that for people who think their subconscious is a direct line to God, it might well seem like a command.

People have irrational phobias about all sorts of things but we shouldn't let them control us and we shouldn't treat them as the commands of a deity

Interesting. I try not to think of anyone having sex of any sort most of the time. It's the only way I can come close to maintaining any sort of equilibrium.

I think Royal Diaper Doody should run ads in CA papers for his handmade wedding rings.
The Rapture already happened. All the good Christians are gone. We're stuck with the rejects.

As long as it's my sauerkraut on my hot dog. Onions too - but definitely no green relish.

If I lost my equilibrium every time I thought of having sex, I'd need a Zimmer frame.
