That's a map of beauty to some, to others it's the beginning of the end.

Mr. Panarin insists he does not dislike Americans. But he warns that the outlook for them is dire.
The professor says he began his career in the KGB in 1976. In post-Soviet Russia, he got a doctorate in political science, studied U.S. economics, and worked for FAPSI, then the Russian equivalent of the U.S. National Security Agency. He says he did strategy forecasts for then-President Boris Yeltsin, adding that the details are "classified."

In September 1998, he attended a conference in Linz, Austria, devoted to information warfare, the use of data to get an edge over a rival. It was there, in front of 400 fellow delegates, that he first presented his theory about the collapse of the U.S. in 2010.

"When I pushed the button on my computer and the map of the United States disintegrated, hundreds of people cried out in surprise," he remembers.

He based the forecast on classified data supplied to him by FAPSI analysts, he says. He predicts that economic, financial and demographic trends will provoke a political and social crisis in the U.S. When the going gets tough, he says, wealthier states will withhold funds from the federal government and effectively secede from the union. Social unrest up to and including a civil war will follow. The U.S. will then split along ethnic lines, and foreign powers will move in. cite

Hogwash you say... but just a day ago Obama told the Senate if they don't pass health care reform the U.S. government will go bankrupt. 2010 should be interesting if not painful to experience one way or another.

This is just propaganda (expletive).

I wouldn't mind joining the EU, if they'd have us. Nice fantasy, but it's as likely as "The Day After Tomorrow" coming true. :?

I'm under the impression you're somewhat correct. Change is impossible in capitalistic America. We can talk about it till no end, but turning America from it's Wal-Mart loving, SUV driving, gun carrying, gay bashing, I must have Nike's and Disney into a responsible mature society willing to be a 'joiner' in the world will never happen. Even if as a whole we want to think of ourselves as better than we are, when it comes to giving up our roads for trains, our paychecks for health, or our pride to end war... then we, 'Americans' just default to what we do best... lie cheat and steal to make a dollar. It's sickening.

They just released a movie that best describes what will happen to America.
The title is Greece.

Too late for you socialist pigs! Obama will have no support from congress after the people speak.
All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second,it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

And you whinge about arrogance

Anyway, it isn't congress that's the problem

It's the Senate where obstructionism rules and one senator can shut down government

Thanks for the ad hominem. It really contributes significantly to the discussion.

You see, the sad part is that I sincerely suspect that even if the Republicans do gain control of all of congress, that the partisan rancor will just continue and that the gridlock will continue either way. The crop of conservatives that look poised to enter are not interested in collaboration or cooperation, only "my way or the highway" small government policies. If the Republicans do not gain the majority, they will continue to block legislation that they don't like (and yet are parading around under the facade of "change"). If they gain the majority and not the supermajority (gaining the supermajority in this election cycle is not possible, I believe), what's to stop the Democrats from using the same tactics that were used on them? Is turnabout not fair play? Constant filibuster does not make friends or allies. Why should the Democrats be interested in allowing the conservative agenda to proceed when they were just recently under a constant requirement to have more than 60 people even agree to discuss a topic?

Additionally, the Republicans in power would also still have to deal with a President who has devoted himself to a progressive, expansive agenda that will not let something pass if he doesn't feel it is in the best interest of the country in his view. And I almost guarantee that Republicans would not be able to over-ride a veto. Rolling back health care doesn't seem like a realistic option, passing tax cuts for all that would increase the deficit does not seem like a realistic option, pretty much everything in the Pledge to America doesn't seem like a realistic option unless they control the supermajority, which means that they're breaking that pledge.

Personally, I see no prospect for "change" or "progress" in the near future, and I believe that the strategy being pursued by Tea Party advocates is actually the reverse of what the country needs. Extremists on either side (for example, any commenter who would refer to his opponent as a "socialist pig") are bad for discourse and bad for policy, so both sides should be voting for people who are interested in reasonable discussion and real problem solving. Frankly, that has been my biggest disappointment in the administration and in politicians in general on both sides of the aisle, since I voted in the hopes that they would do SOMETHING to alleviate the partisan atmosphere in Washington.

To be honest, BHL, in the past I've appreciated your comments because although we haven't agreed on topics, at least you've been polite (relatively speaking) and willing to engage in discussion. However, more recently, you have become more wont to drop ad hominems in place of substantive discussion, and that disappoints me as someone who comes to this site interested in more than name-calling (imagine, the novelty).

True, dat. The real problem facing American politics is polarization. So long as these parties lead the American people into seeing each other as "evil," no real discussion can take place, and we will end up with anarchy via governmental paralysis. Both parties are playing a part in this paralysis, though from what I have seen, the Republicans are the primary culprits. They are misleading their followers into seeing non-Republicans (and many within their own party) as being a much "the enemy" as Al Qaeda is. That's no way to govern a nation.
