On this very day in 1955, a simple wall clock and a slippery toilet seat would lead to the invention of the Flux Capacitor; The device necessary to generate the 1.21 gigawatts of electricity needed to create a time-displacement field thus allowing time travel.

Remember, remember the fifth of November
Timepiece and slippery pot.
I cannot factor, why the Flux Capacitor
Should ever be forgot.

Calm down Marty, I didn't disintegrate anything. The molecular structure of Einstein and the car are completely intact.

Erm... I think you'll find that the Flux Capacitor REQUIRED the power to create the field. That's where the plutonium came in.

And later, the Mr. Fusion.

You got a real attitude problem, McFly. You're a slacker. You remind me of your father when he went here. He was a slacker, too.

Unbelievable, that old Biff could have chosen that particular date.
This is our chance to change things, this is our destiny.

It could mean that that point in time inherently contains some sort of cosmic significance. Almost as if it were the temporal junction point for the entire space-time continuum. On the other hand, it could just be an amazing coincidence.
