The amazing Stephen Hawking is stepping down from his professor position at Cambridge University. Not for health reasons, as one might expect -- but because that position is traditionally vacated at latest when the occupant reaches the age of 67.

But happily, he is not retiring. He will stay on as director of research. With all the terrific new tools for physics research providing so much new raw material for research, there's probably no one better to have working in the thick of it all than him.

And don't forget -- if he was so unfortunate as to live under Britain's health care system, he would never have survived to do his work.

I was really hoping I wasn't the only one to pick up on that....

Now I swear, I read somewhere in one of my Republican emails, Hawking died waiting in line for health-care.... must have been an urban legend.
This is our chance to change things, this is our destiny.

The did indeed have a talking point, hastily retracted, that said that Hawking would have gotten a thumbs-down from a British death panel had he been unfortunate enough to live under their evil system.

It were rather embarrassing, but we all know that the Republican threshold for embarrassment is rather high.

Maybe he will get a chance to run one over in his wheel chair someday.
