EU protects food made from raw pork

No wonder everyone wants to go Europe. Even the food gets a babysitter. Their government dollars hard at work. Mmmmm.... raw pork.

Call me a rebel, but I'm thinking raw pork might be bad for you.

Makers of the Melton Mowbray pork pie are celebrating after their product passed the final hurdle in a campaign to get special European status.

Pork pie campaigner Matthew O'Callaghan said the meat pie now has "protected geographical status" after a six-month appeal period expired.

Only pork pies made in specific areas of the East Midlands can use the term Melton Mowbray in their branding.

Melton Mowbray Pork Pies were awarded the interim status in April.

Uncured pork

Mr O'Callaghan, chairman of the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association (MMPPA), said: "It was the last day for other member states (of the European Union) to object to the Melton Mowbray pie being protected across Europe.

"There were no objections so therefore protection for the pie after 10 years' campaigning will be automatic. We've got it."

Melton Mowbray pork pies are distinctive as they are made from uncured pork, to ensure the inside is grey in colour.

Other foods added to the list included Arbroath Smokies, Cornish Clotted Cream and Welsh Lamb.

Only producers making pork pies using a traditional recipe and in the vicinity of Melton Mowbray can use the town's name.

The pies now enjoy the same status under European law as Champagne, Parma ham and Jersey Butter.

Read the article again Matt. Pay attention to the words, they have meaning.

Melton Mowbray pork pies are made from 'uncured' pork - not uncooked. In other words they are made from cooked pork not ham.

You're not a rebel, Matt, you're a MAVERICK
All stupid ideas pass through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is ridiculed. Third, it is ridiculed

And you're not a man... you only play one on tv.

Food gets a special European status? Will it get a representative in parliament?

Yes Matt, it has a whole department devoted to it. Most countries do.

not even close to the same thing.
