To follow up on my other top 10 list, I decided to list my top 10 Greensboro restaurants. Yes I know they're more, But here's my rules. Under 10 dollars a person, and it must be D. E. licous. Oh and if its notorious, well then that's taken into consideration as well. So without anymore rambling and again in no particular order.

Top 10 Greensboro Restaurants

10. Cookout
In all my travels I have yet to find another restaurant that applied the 21 flavors concept to hamburgers. What certainly started out a a Greensboro concept has expanded into other parts of the Triad. Greensboro without Cookout is like the Vatican without a pope.

9. Haybles Hearth
I've already expressed my love for their home cooked low priced food, in a previous article. This restaurant may be the only exposure students at UNCG get to religion.

8. Country BBQ
Another one I've already covered. Awesome breakfast biscuits and great food. This used to be the only reason to go to Wendover besides buying a car.

7. Stamey's
I'm not a big Stamey's fan, but I know a lot of you are. It certainly is one of the main reasons Greensboro has been crowned one of the best Carolina Barbecue restaurants more then a few times.

6. Beef Burger
Filmed in several movies this 50's style burger drive-in still features its trademarked carousel of fat to cook burgers. Not healthy, but who cares... it's a Greensboro Icon. Hale Beef Burger.

5. Ham's
Ham's is as close to Cheers as your going to get here in Greensboro. If your a regular, they probably know your name in this sports-bar-grill-restaurant. The Kitschy decor makes this a great hangout for numerous Greensborians

4. Jan's House
Another restaurant I've spoken about before is Jan's house. The only restaurant in Greensboro guaranteed to be open. Great food. Inexpensive, and notorious hang-out for students.

3. Captain Bill's Seafood
Captain bill's is a restaurant I've actually not talked about before. Their located on West Market street just past Guilford College Road heading towards the airport. Can you say 3.95 for a whopper of a plate of popcorn shrimp? That's why I must add it to this list.

2.New York Pizza
Want New York Style Pizza and a cold beer to wash it down? Only one place offers authentic big apple style pizza by the slice within walking distance to a college photo copying store. Get full, get drunk, then Xerox.

1. Yum Yums
Yum Yums is definitely a landmark restaurant in Greensboro. With the demise of Sally's, it IS the official destination for hot dogs in Greensboro. Not only that but if you want to find if your UNCG daughter or son is skipping class, stop by here during the semester.

Hey, I've decided to lighten up a little and ask some foodie questions of you all.

Has anyone eaten at any of these new restaurants?

Hemingway's
Much
Minj
Metro Gourmet
Natty Greene's

I'm trying to get some outside reviews/opinions for chefmoz.org, a free sight where anyone can review restaurants. I happen to be the editor for Greensboro. It's a thankless job, but someone has to do it! BTW the list is incomplete so don't be alarmed if your favorite place is not listed yet.I'm working on it!

We need a Maggianos.

Natty Greenes is unimpressive as a English type pub. The food was terrible.

I have not tried Natty Green's beer yet, the food I had was OK, nothing to write home about, but it wasn't terrible. I hear the main reason to go is the beer though, supposed to be very good.

Thanks for adding that Cone post, forgot about Saffron's. I gotta try that one.

So far, a few of my favs in G-vegas are Arigato, Mexicos, Rearn Thai and Smokey Bones. Noble's in Highpoint may be expensive, but it is some of the best food in the area.

Hemingway's, now Churchill's, does not really serve food; just like 3 appetizers and a dessert. They do have a "Member's Appreciation" buffet on Thursday nights which is mediocre at best. Well, I haven't been there in a few months, because it's boring, over-rated, over-priced and the service is poor, but that's what it was like back in Feb.

The food at Much is okay, but service in the restaurant is horrific; bar service is okay though.

Minj...THE BEST WINGS IN GREENSBORO! Decent drink prices and good service. GO THERE TODAY!!

Metro Gourmet is AWESOME! Great sandwiches at good prices, and you can get beer/wine there (pretty good selections). The service is good and Noah, the owner, is just a really nice guy.

Natty's is okay.

I'd like to add that Solaris is the best place that no one is going to. The service is great, they have the best bartenders in Greensboro and the food is delicious. We've never had a bad meal there. Plus, the menu changes throughout the year, so you're always getting something different. Stop by on a Thursday night for 1/2 tapas between 5:00 and 7:00pm in the lounge area.

The last couple of times I went to Solaris, it was closed when it was *supposed* to be open. Probably was just my luck, but none-the-less I finally just gave up on trying and went places that kept to their posted hours.

Hmmmm, they have been experimenting with hours the last couple of months. They are definitely open Tue - Sat at 5:00pm, and I believe open for lunch Tue - Fri from 11:00am - 2:00pm, I think. We were just there last Thu & Fri nights, so they are definitely open then! Go on a Thu between 5-7 and get 1/2 off all tapas.

I'll have to try and check it out again. Now, I just have to make the time. It's like a block down from me but I rarely get home before 11 anymore.

Hey Rumface,
Funny you should mention that Noah was a nice guy...I worked there for like a minute in restaurant time. He was nice, but I was a little concerned about him going under due to staffing issues, trying to take on too much too fast and he made many rookie mistakes for someone who has been in the business for a long time. I heard he got a good head cook in there now. Glad to hear people like the food - he's got everything invested into that place so I'd hate to see him fail. Keep on eating there!

There's definitely some issues, and he seems to be getting through them. He's in a pretty good location and the food is some of the best deli food in Greensboro. We do our share to keep him in business!

I can add a couple:

Giacomo's Deli, High Point Road. Best sausage in town, killer tiramisu, wonderful snadwiches. Try the Phillipo. Point to it and they'll give you a taste of anything.

Golden Wok, Target Shopping Center, Stanley Road/West Wendover Ave. Don't have any idea how "authentic" it is, but it's damned good at a great price and about twice what any normal human can consume at a sitting. Ask for a "to go" box. Try the Chicken with Cashews.

Went by Pita Delite for lunch today. The only thing impressive about the place was the price. $9.90 for one Gyro plate and a drink(!)...and they use the cheap, frozen, thin sliced Steam-umm-type meat that you can buy at Costco. Greensboro has got to have something more than that going for it.

Does anyone know where to get some good Greek food here in town?

You can try "Acropolis" in Downtown. I've heard mixed reviews on the restaurant, but the food is supposed to be very authentic. 99blocks had an article on it in this week's edition as well.

Best Gyro in town is over at 'Jack's Deli' at the corner of Spring Garden and Aycock.
Great people run the place! Everything I've had on the menu has been top notch!

I second that motion. It's a nice clean place to eat. Nothing real fancy except the taste of the food.

Upon the recommendation of a friend I stopped by a restaurant a few days ago at the shopping center where Guilford College Road meets Piedmont Parkway. The name of the place is "Taste Of Troy". They had THE BEST gyro I've come across this side of the Atlantic Ocean (even better than anything I could find in Los Angeles). The atmosphere is lacking but what it lacks there it makes up for in taste. They're going to be seeing a lot of me there. Good stuff.

I haven't had a chance to check out Jack's Deli yet. It's on the short list of places to visit. Thanks for the info.

Hubby & I have eaten at Solaris & the paella is pretty similar to the paella I had in Madrid. The service is really good & the set up is quite chic. The only disappointing aspect of the restaurant is the tiny parking lot. However, parking on the street is available most of the time.

I don't consider Solaris "fine dining". Seems rather casual to me.

Everyone has a differing perspective on what they want out of a dining experience. That's why I really enjoy the variety of places that are available in the area. The few occasions when I want a truly "fancy" meal, there are a fair number of places to choose from (Flemings, out at the new shops at Friendly is the newest one I've found in that category)... but places that are "just nice" or "fun" or "quick and easy" are in good supply also.

Once upon a time I had a system of plastic cutlery versus metal cutlery to determine casual, fine, etc. I think I made it up in middle school or high school (which I hope explains how silly it is). I think that was one of my earlier lessons in trying to categorize stuff and being too general with it. Places like cafeterias (K&W for example) or CiCi's that have metal cutlery and definitely aren't of the calibur of fine or formal dining.

My father ? He also said "You can't eat a chandelier."

I like a little "fancy" once in a while, and don't mind paying well for a really good meal and a good value. But I've never been anyplace that was worth wearing a tie.

BTW, should you find yourself in N. Myrtle beach - as I unfortunately did last week - this place, even with its highly unassuming name, was outstanding. Prices weren't even that bad - for Myrtle Beach, anyway - and they were excellent for moi, since somebody else was paying the whole bill.

yes YES YES! Taste of Troy is right down the street from me so I am there a couple times a week. They just added shish kebobs to the menu and I am addicted. Also their gyros, with fresh dill sprinkled on top, are amazing. I would definitely say they beat Jack's gyros.

We ate at Taste of Troy on Saturday, it was one of the best gyros I've had aside from Tarpon Springs, FL that I've had in a LOONG time. I went inside to return the baskets and I told the owner that he was on here and that we would definitely be back. The fresh dill, cukes & tomatoes are to die for. He actually is from the city of Troy! He seemed VERY proud of the fact that he had made the board.
